THE WEATHER.
TORRENTIAL RAIN IN ASHBURTON. DRIVEN BY SOUTHERLY WIND. Misty rain fell in Ashburton yesterday afternoon and during the night, and showers became heavier to-day until the downpour was a particularly heavy one. The rain was driven by a strong southerly wind, .and did not cease all day, a thick drizzle being experienced between the torrential showers. Sixty points of rain were recorded up to 9 o’clock this morning. This makes 2.64 inches for the month to date. , Heavy rain has been falling throughout the County in the last two days. The gauge at Methyen registered 125 points up to 9 o’clock this morning. The temperature was low in Ashburton, and conditions generally were very wintry. The barometer has been unsteady during the last 24 hours, but the reading at 9 a.ni. was higher than that yesterday morning. . The figure was 29.37 inches, compared with 29.02 inches yesterday. Extreme temperatures yesterday and last night were,4B degrees and 43.3 degrees, compared with 46.8 degrees and 34.7 degrees on Monday. TO-DAY’S FORECAST. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, This'Day. The Government Meteorologist, .at noon to-day, issued, the following statement regarding the weather:—. General inference: A deep depression lies off the east coast of New Zealand. An intense anti-cyclone is located over eastern Australia. The forecast for- the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru is as follows: Moderate to strong southerly winds of gale force in places. Weather cold and unsettled, with intermittent rain and on the high country snow. Seas rough and increasing.
