OBITUARY.
MAJOR R. J. BARNES. (Special to the "Guardian.") CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The death occurred last evening at his home, Dickens Street, Addington, of Major Robert John Barnes, a wellknown officer of the Salvation Army in Christchurch. Major Barnes, who was 77 years of age, became suddenly ill last Saturday. He had been in the Salvation Army for more than 4o years, 23 of which had been spent in Christchurch. . Born in Tamworth, Staffordshire, England, in 1857, Major Barnes was educated at the Old Edgbaston School, in Birmingham. When he was 20 years of age he left England and went to Victoria, Australia. Ho firsb joined the Salvation Army in 1890, _ in Australia, and worked in Australia for 18 years, doing special held work, boys' home work, People's Palace .management, and work for the inebriates. He came to New Zealand 27 years ago, and for four years was stationed at Roto Roa Island, a home for inebriates, under Salvation Army control. He was then transferred to the men's home at Addington, of which he was in charge until 12 years ago, when he retired. In spite of his retirement, however. Major Barnes continued to do Army work, assisting at the Addington home, and doing muqfe work lii the Magistrate's Court, in which he had been a familiar figure for more than 20 years. He is survived by his wife and ono daughter. MR WALTER HILL. m WELLINGTON; June 17. Mr Walter Hill, who was well known in sporting circles in Pctone and Eastbourne is dead. He was born at Wellington in 1865, and in later years entered business in Petone and Eastbourne. From 1926 to 1931 he was i proprietor of the Tarawera- Hotel. He • was a former member of the Petono • Borough Council, also a member of the Petone Cricket Club and the Petone Bowling Club.
