SIGNS OF WEARINESS.
THE WHEELBARROW MARATHON ELEVEN MILES ON SECOND DAY. (United Press Association —Copyright.) MELBOURNE, June 17. . In the wheelbarrow marathon Mr T. Parkinson covered 11 miles to-day, and he showed signs of weariness. Mr Evans's chief diversion is goading Mr Parkinson to greater effort. Residents «en route are treating the men hospitably. Through hail and rain, with the temperature never far above freezing point, Mr T. Parkinson on Sunday pushed a wheelbarrow containing Mr E. Evans. At the end of the day's run, in which 11 miles was covered, Mr Parkinson was a stone lighter,, while Mr Evans had lost 81b. Such, was the result of the first day of the much-advertised wheelbarrow derby from Beechworth to Mount Buffalo Chalet, a distance of 50i miles. If Mr Parkinson covers the journey in eight days he collects £2O; if he fails the money will go to Mr Evans. A wager of £2O a-side was entered into recently between two prominent citizens of Beechworth, Victoria, Mr T. Parkinson having bet Mr IS. Evans that he could wheel him from Beechwood to Mt. Buffalo Chalet, 50£ miles, in an ordinary wheelbarrow in eightdays. The bet was made in April when the two men were riding over the hilly a-oad together. Mr Evans said he would not like to walk up that grade. Mr Parkinson said lie could wheel him up it. Mr Parkinson is a garage proprietor, 45 years of age, 6ft lin. in height, and weighs lost. Mr Evans, a publican, weighs lost. The route includes 18 miles up a steep mountainside, and the conditions provide that Mr Evans may alight from the barrow when Mr Parkinson has found it necessary to rest for 15 minutes. The latter's plan of action, however, is based on rests of only 14 minutes, and he hopes that cramp may force his passenger to leave the barrow before the full distance is covered.
