POLICY QUESTIONS.
UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF. INCREASED PAYMENTS SOUGHT. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 15. Important general policy questions relating to unemployment relief were discussed at a private deputation to the Minister of Employment (the Hon. S. G. Smith), by Mr 0. Morse (president of the Municipal Association), Mr J. Hurley (secretary), Dean Julius, and Messrs D. G. Sullivan, E. J. Howard and H. S. S. Kyle, Christchurch members of Parliament. The requests were that there should be a 20 per cent, increase in Scheme 5 and sustenance payments, the construction of public works at standard wages, and an increase, if necessary, of the unemployment tax to one shilling in the £ to provide adequate finance for these extensions. The Minister, in reply, pointed out that these were all-important policy questions which necessitated consideration by Cabinet, and he would undertake to have all the matters submitted to them. Another question on which there has been considerable discussion in Christchurch was cleared up, the Minister making it clear that there was no intention on the part of the Unemployment Board to refuse to meet the cost of administration in connection with the river protection scheme, on which, if necessary, 500 men can be engaged.
