KIDNAPPERS FOILED.
ASTUTE POLICE STRATAGEM. SIX BULLETS HIT GANGSTER. . SAN FRANCISCO, May 27. Federal police—known as "G (Government) men," used one of their number, who closely resembled the intended victim, to trap a member of a kidnapping* gang at Pasadena to-day. • ■'•< The gang had been threatening the president of the Los Angeles Bankers'; Association (Mr Herbert Iyey) unless he paid 70,000 dollars (about £14,000). The decoy, resembling Iyey, went to a pre-arranged place, and picked np a note in a tobacco tin. Under rumble ("dickey") seat of his ear was a detective operating «. two-way radio set. The decoy carried the tin to a specified place and departed. Presently a carload of concealed detectives saw a car drive up. The-occu-pants got out, picked up the tin and continued on down the highway. Then the police car roared into action. The -detectives forced the kidnap car to the kerb. The driver opened fire on the police, hitting Lieutenant Perry, whose armour deflected the bulThe gangster soon fell, wounded by six bullets. He was taken to hospital. His condition is grave.
