ROYAL DRIVER
DUKE ON TUBE TRAINS. AN EMERGENCY STOP MADE. TROUBLE ON UNDERGROUND. (United Press Association—Copyright). LONDON, June 14. The Duke of Kent, in company with Lord Ashfield (chairman of the London Transport Co.), inspected the school for drivers and. guards of the underground railways, and later drove three tube trains, under instruction. In the first of these, owing to a delay in applying the brakes, the train slightly overran a station before pulling up. On the second occasion, during a journey from Waterloo, there was an unusual occurrence. A defective train had been brought to a standstill in the Goodge Street station, and it became necessary for the Duke to halt his train, which was following on the same metals, and switch off the current. The passengers, who had to alight, were unaware of the fact that the Duke was in charge of their train. The defect, which was repaired within 13 minutes, occurred during a quiet time of the day and caused only slight inconvenience to travellers. The third journey, back to Leicester Square, passed without incident. The Duke inspected the new station there and examined its escalators, the working of which was explained to him.
