EVICTIONS IN SYDNEY.
ONLY 35 IN 15 MONTHS. OVER 7000 ORDERS ISSUED. Mr Hawkins, a members of the New South AVales Cabinet, said lately that there was a false impression that there bad been hundreds of evictions in Sydney, whereas since the beginning of 1934 there has been only 35. Under the 'Landlord and Tenant Act, he said, no person could take possession of any dwelling-house, the rental of which did not exceed £3 per week, without an order of the Court.
Since the beginning of 1934, 7062 orders had been made, but of these 3136, or 44.4 per cent were made by consent. The number of warrants issued by 2926, but the total number of evictions reported was only 35, representing less than one-half of one per cent of the total orders made, or 1.2 per cent of the warrants issued. “It must be remembered,” Mr Hawkins added, “that among that 35 there were some who were determined, for purposes of political agitation, to be evicted. They constantly refused to accept any assistance from the Government, and indicated clearly that they would take no steps to prevent the eviction. I consider that the figures reveal a state of affairs ci editable to the Government.”
