PASSES THROUGH ASHBURTON.

PEOPLE ASSEMBLE AT STATION,

A CHARM MING INFORMAL - INTERLUDE.

Ashburton’s first contact with the new Governor-General (Viscount Galway) and Lady Galway, though unofficial, was a most happy one. ‘ In the course of his first visit to the- South Island, his Excellency passed through Ashburton on the south-bound express train this morning on his way from Christchurch to Dunedin. He was accompanied by Lady Galway, Sir Standish O’Grady Roche and Captain A. G. W. Heber-Percy. A number of people assembled at the railway station to see the official party and w r ere very pleased when both Lord and Lady Galway and the members of their staff left the vice-regal, car and moved among them. The Governor-General shook hands with many, as did also Lady Galway, and both expressed their pleasure at the opportunity of meeting some of the residents of Ashburton. They had a few words with a number, and the aides-de-camp also chatted with several parties. Residents who had an opportunity to speak with the new GovernorGeneral and his wife were charmed with their gracious and friendly manner. All members of the parly said they had been impressed with the scenic beauty of the Southern Alps as they travelled from Christchurch and were looking forward to the remainder of the journey to Dunedin. Mesdames F. Curtis (president of the Mid-Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes) and E. M. Begg (president of the Mid-Canterbury Provincial Executive of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand 1 Farmers’ Union) attended to greet Lady Galway as representatives of the women of the Ashburton County, and more particularly of the country women. Mrs Curtis presented her Excellency with a bouquet of roses on behalf of the federation. An invitation to visit Ashburton ciuiing her next stay in Christchurch and address a meeting of women, extended by Mrs Curtis, was graciously accepted by Lady Galway, who said she would he delighted to meet the women of this district. . As the train left the station, cheers were given for the Governor-General and Lady Galway.
