RAIN AFTER NORTH-WEST WIND
With a low barometer, indications were for a change this morning. ine wind from the north-cast was cold until it veered to the north-west, and the temperature became consideiabiy more mild. .. Conditions overhead were dull, arid rain commenced! in a light shower about 2 o’clock. The vmd laid risen somewhat by then. The barometric pressure at 9 a.m. was 29.31 inches, and extreme temperatures yesterday and last night were 55.1 degrees and 37.9 degrees. , One point of rain fell during the last 24 hours.
CONDITIONS IN APRIL. With 2.37 inches in Ashburton last month, the rainfall was the heaviest in April since 1932. t Last ybar the monthly total was 1.48 inches; m D 33, 84 points; 1932 , 3.08 inches; 19.31, 1-4 inches; 1930, 1.77 inches; _ . . The heaviest single tall 01 ram last; month was 90 points during the hours ended at 9 a.m. on April l-'-Altogether, rain fell on 19 days. There were, eight frosts during April, the heaviest one being 6.8 degrees on April 14. One frost was recorded in March. . , . A reading of 29.49 inches on April 3 and 11 was the lowest barometric pressurei during the month, the highest being 30.16 inches on April 12. Maximum shade temperatures varied from 77 degrees on April 7 to 52.8 degrees on April 29, while extremes of inside minimum leadings were 55./ degrees on April 5 and 30 degrees on April 13

The Government Meteorologist,. at noon to-day, issued tlie following statement regarding the weather:— General inference: A deep depression is crossing the/Dominion, the centre being to the south. Pressure is rising rapidly 7 over eastern Australia. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru is as follows: Strong northerly winds to gales, backing to southerlies to-night. Weather becoming unsettled, and some rain probable, snow on the ranges and bail in places. Temperatures becoming cold. Seas moderate at first in coastal waters, otherwise rough.
