JUDGE APPOINTED

MR J. B. CALLAN, K.C.

DISTINGUISHED CAREER.

(Special to the " Guardian.") WELLINGTON, April 29

The new Judge to fill the vacancy caused by Sir Alexander Herdman's resignation is Mr J. B. Callau, formerly of Dunedin and now a resident of Wellington. He will take up his duties immediately on a temporary appointment, which will be made permanent upon the expiration of Sir Alexander Herdman's leave at the end of July.

Mr John Bartholomew Callan is the son of Mr J. B. Callan, of Dunedin. He was born in 1882. He was educated at, the Christian Brothers School, in Dunedin, and later graduated B.A. at Otago University. In 1906 he obtained his LL.B. and became a partner in the legal firm of Callan and Callaway in 1907, on the retirement of his father. For many years Mr Callan has been the senior partner in the firm. During the Great War he served as a captain in the 3rd Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Bribade. In the course of a distinguished legal career Mr. Callan has been lecturer in Torts and Dean of the Faculty of Lavy at the University of Otago. He is a member of the Council of Legal Education and has held office as president of the Otago Law Society. Even since his school days lie has taken an active interest in sport, notably in athletics, and was at one time president of the Otago Amateur Athletic Association. An interest close to his heard has been that of the ex-service man in civilian life, and Mr Callan has held office in the Returned Soldiers' Association for some years as a vice-presi-dent.
