LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From "Guardian," April 30, 1885.) Control of Domain.—At the meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council last evening, Cr. Harrison gave notice that at next meeting he would move: ' 'That whereas the Domain is a public recreation reserve situated within the Borough of Ashburton, which Borough is called upon to pay a portion of the expenses of keeping the said Domain in order, this Council is of opinion that the Borough of Ashburton should be represented upon the Domain Board by the Mayor and two councillors, who shall cease to be members of the said Board upon going out of office as councillors. That the present method adopted by the Government is unjust to the burgesses, in so far as that the burgesses have no control whatever over the life members as at. oresent appointed. That this Council in nominating two of its members to sit on the said Domain Board did so under the impression that it nominated .councillors and not life members. That this Council make the proper representation to the Government in the hope that this injustice to the burgesses be removed."
