A motion of sympathy 'with Mr H. W. Sberratt in the death of his father was passed by the Ashburton East School Committee Ijjst evening.
Mr J. E. Fotheringham, a shift clerk at the Ashburton railway station, who has been on sick leave for the last three months, will resume duty to-morrow.
Mr W- Bryant left by train this morning to attend a meeting of the Waipiata Sanatorium Committee at Dunedin.
Mr F. C. Brown (chief poultry instructor of the Department of Agriculture) retires to-day after 33 years' service. He will be succeeded by Mr C. Cussen.
Mr C. A.- Innes, of Ashburton, has. been appointed vice-president of Rolleston House, Christchurch, for the current year. The election of Mr Innes was confirmed by the Canterbury College Council yesterday afternoon.
The appointment of Sir James Gunson as acting-chairman of the Government Railways'Board during Mr H. H. Sterling's absence was announced last night by the acting-Minister of Railways (the Hon. R, Masters).
Mis s M. McMillan, who has been on the staff of S. Madden's tea rooms for nine years and will leave shortly for Auckland, was entertained at a picture party by her fellow employees last evening. During supper, Miss I. Rose presented her with a travelling hat box on behalf of members of the staff.
