FOOTBALL.

THE ASH BURTON UNION. MANY UNREGISTERED PLAYERS. The Management Committee of the Ashburton Rugby Union met last evening, Mr H. R. D. Porter presiding. The secretary (Mr G. V. Furby) reported that a number of players who took part in matches on the opening day were unregistered, and others had not had clearances granted. Hinds played) four unregistered players and two transfers were required, Technical Old Boys had two and one respectively, Methven seven unregistered players, Old Boys 12, Rakaia 1, Tinwald. 3, and Springburn 3. The chairman said clubs had had plenty of time to arrange such matters before this and the rules should be enforced.

"We cannot have rules and keep on breaking them," commented Mr E. S. Chambers.

Mr G. Day said this should have been completed at the commencement of the season. The chairman considered that teams playing unregistered players on Saturday should forfeit matches in accordance with the rules.

It was agreed that all registrations should be completed and clearances granted by Saturday. The secretary also stated that the

Ashburton Sports Association had assessed the Union £2 2s for the first closed day on the Domain Oval and £1 Is for any other matches in the Domain. , Members considered this arrangement very satisfactory. The New Zealand Union wrote stating that the application for the, reinstatement of B. Dynes (Rakaia) had been granted. It was- decided to advise the Rakaia Club accordingly. _ . The Canterbury Union advised that its selectors did not desire a match for the representatives on May 6, and suggested that the Linwood Club might be prepared to play in Ashburton if expenses were paid. It was agreed to invite Linwood to play a match on the Domain Oval on this date. . As a curtain-raiser for this ftxture, it was decided to accept the offer of the Ashburton Primary Schools' Sports Association to stage a school boys match between midget teams from the Borough and Allenton Schools and the Ashburton East and Tinwald Schools. The Kia Ora Cricket Club was thanked for its offer to entertain the visitors at its ball in the evening. . The Ashburton Referees' Association thanked the Union for its donations and invited members to a meeting tonight when Mr J. MacMillan (delegate to the Dominion Conference of the Referees' Association) will speak. Four footballs were granted to the football sub-committee of the Ashburton Primary Schools' Sports Association. The Lauriston School's application'for a ball was also granted.

CANTERBURY TRIAL MATCH. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. On the recommendation of the competitions committee, the Canterbury Rugby Union decided last evening to. play a representative trial match on Jubilee Day (May 6). This match, it was stated, would be of assistance to the selectors in choosing a Canterbury team and also in nominating players for the All Black trial match. A letter was received from the Ash r burton Union suggesting that a match, South Canterbury and Ashburton v. Canterbury, be played 1 at Ashburton on May 18. The president (Dr. W. S. Seed) reported that the matter had been under consideration by the competitions committee, which had no recommendation to make.
