MEAT LEVY ISSUE.
NEW ZEALAND'S REPLY. PUBLICATION POSSIBLE. (Special to the " Guardian.") WELLINGTON, March 7. There is a possibility! that the Government this week will disclose officiallv its policy on the meat levy issue. It is reported in the lobbies that the summary of the British White Paper which was cabled to New Zealand today does not coincide in every respect with the terms of that document as it was understood by the New Zealand Ministers, thus raising a doubt as to whether there have been modifications or material alterations since the pape.' was originally issued to the Dominion Government. It is understood that the Government is considering the publication of its reply to the British proposals, together with the full text of the White Paper, if this course is not objected to by the Home authorities. It has already been clearly indicated that New Zealand is opposed to an import levy in any circumstances, and it can be taken for granted that this is stressed in the reply to the British Government.
EXPORT RESTRICTED. PORKER PIGS FOR BRITAIN. WELLINGTON, ThislDay. The export of porker pigs to the United Kingdom by vessels scheduled to arrive there on or before June 30— unless with the consent of the Minister of: Agriculture acting on the recommendation of the Meat Producers Board—is prohibited by ''Gazette notice published last night. In the meantime permits will be granted only in respect to pigs slaughtered on or before March 7. STRONG COMPETITION. ARGENTINE WITH AUSTRALIA.
SYDNEY, March 7
Mr William Vestey (assistant manager in London of the Blue Star Line and a son of Sir William Vestey), arrived by the Strathaird en route to New Zealand He says he spent some time in the Argentine, where beef producers and shippers were wide awake to the requirements of the London market. Australia would not find it easy to compete with the Argentine in the chilled beef market in England on account of the difference in freight, the distance between the two countries and the low cost of production in the Argentine.
