STEAM LOCOMOTIVES.

SUPREME ON RAILWAY. (United Press Association —Copyright.) LONDON, March 6. The speed made by the London and North-Eastern special train between Newcastle and London yesterday, maintaining 106.6 miles per hour for twelve miles of the journey, was the highest ever reached by a steam train anywhere in the world. The effort was undertaken to prove that the supremacy of the coal-fired locomotive cannot yet be challenged for long-distance, high-speed running and that not only is it capable of hauling heavier ,loads at higher speeds than the electricallydriven Diesel unit but also that its superior adaptability gives it definite economic advantages.—British Official Wireless.
