LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From "Guardian," March 8, 1885.) Collection of Plums.—At the annual show of the Christchurch Horticultural Society on Thursday, Mr G. fl'._St. Hill carried off first with the collection of plums which we note.d in our columns the other day. The "Times" speaks of them as being "astonishingly fine " Coursing Reason. —The season for coursing, a sport which has become immensely popular in this district, is again nearing its opening, and we no-tice-that the local club is making preparations for an early start. A meeting will shortly be held for the purpose of"electing officers, drafting > programme for the ensuing year, and other business. Insurance Promotion. —The many friends of Mr G. T. Henry, formerly agent for the Mutual Assurance Society of Victoria in the Ashburton aistrict, will he gratified to hear that that gentleman has been .appointed District Agent for Christchurch. This promotion, we aire assured, has - been secured through the success which has attendel Mr Henry's energetic i efforts since his connection with the company, and all will heartily join with us in wishing him a -prosperous time '" among our city .brethren. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From "Guardian,'-' March 8, 1910.) Threshing Returns.—All the threshing mills in the Ashburton district Jo not complain of a low average. One mill-owner states that lie threshed out 40,000 bushels in 28 days: and .the earnings of the men were 14s per day-r per man, clear of food expenses/ Speculative Buying.—lt is said that several of those who bought sections at the Lagmhor subdivision sale on Saturday did so for purely speculative purposes. One buyer was offered £2 per acre on his bargain a few hours after the sale, but declined to sell. Profusion of Flowers.—Visitors to Ashburton are astonished at the profusion of flowers and foliage to be seen everywhere. The Domain is as gay i»s ths garilen in Aladdin's wonderful underground palace, and if near a, big centre would, like that wonder of wonders, turn to gold and gems. The potential moneyi value contained in the local Domain may be left to the imagination, in view of the fact that in Wellington roses sell freely at 2d to 4d each, and the commonest flowers are retailed at two for a penny.
