WOMEN BEHEADED
BERLIN EXECUTIONS.
AN UNPRECEDENTED EVENT. SELLING OF MILITARY PLANS. CHIEF OFFENDER MAY ESCAPE. EXCHANGE FOR POLISH PRISONERS. •■.:'■ ,- • (United Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.5 a.m.) BERLIN, February 18. The beautiful golden-haired Baroness von Berg, and Frau yon Natzner have been beheaded. Hew Hitler declined mercy. An official announcement says that Baron von Sosnowski and Fraulein von Jena have been sentenced to imprisonment for life.
The beheading of two women, both of aristocratic Prussian families, is unprecedented in German history. ,It is understood that the offence was stealing the plans of the German General Staff lor the invasion pf Poland. r
The executioner wore traditional evening dress with white gloves. After each beheading the executioner exclaimed, "Justice has'been, done." Sosnowsky, the principal offender, seems likely to escape punishment as he will probably be exchanged for three Germans now in a Polish prison on charges of espionage.
The People's Court sentenced to death for espionage and high treason Baron Sosnowski, a Polish officer. Three women—Frau yon Berg, Fraulein von Natzmer and Fraulein von Jena were sentenced to life imprisonment. The parties were arrested in April, 1934. The trial began a week ago. The two single women were employed at the War Office and allegedly supplied Sosnowski with copies of documents relating to the expansion of the German Army. The women's extravagance in dress aroused suspicion. It is understood that Sosnowski and Frau von Berg were married during their long imprisonment, the latter having obtained a divorce. As a result Sosnowski refused an offer of repatriation to Poland as an exchange prisoner.
