(From Our Own Correspondents.) . .• .-t WATERTON. \ The quarterly summoned meeting of the Loyal Waterton Lodge, M.U.1.0.0. F., was held on Saturday evening, the N.G. (Sister E. Soal) presiding over a large attendance. The sick .visitors reported four members on the lodge funds, and £lO 16s 8d was'passed in sick pay. The secretary of the United Friendly Societies Association notified that the annual meeting of that body would be 'held on Thursday, February 28, and Bro. J. L. Soal was elected delegate, also delegate on the United Friendly Societies’ Dispensary Committee, vice the late Bro. W. TfSoal. The District. Secretary (Bro. A. C. Hardy) notified that the annual conference would be held on Saturday, March 23, and the following nominations were decided upon:— D.D.G.M., Bro. If. C. Patterson; D l . Trustee, Bro. J. L. Soal; Management Committee, Bros. H. C. Patterson, J. ;S: Moffatt, J. S. Donaldson arid G. E. Blee. Three candidates were proposed find elected. There was a very good congregation at the Church of St. Philip and St. James yesterday, when a harvest thanksgiving service was conducted by the Rev, B. Taylor, who gave an interesting address lAlsed on HJabakkuh), chapter 3, verses 17 ana 18. The church was tastefully decorated with flowers, grain, fruit, vegetables and other produce. Miss Jaine presided at the organ.

MOUNT SOMERS. A successful dance was held in the Memorial Hall on Saturday evening in aid of the Mount Somers Swimming Club. There was a good attendance, including representatives from surrounding clubs. Music was supplied by Cook’s (Lyndhurst), and extras were played by Mrs A. L. Jones (Ashburton). " Mr J. A. Mears was M. Supper was dispensed by the ladies. Those present at a meeting of the Mount Somers sub-branch of the Plunket Society, held in the library on Thursday afternoon, were Mesdames A. N. Grigg (president),. S'. Mactier, W. J. Comyns, R. Young and E. W. Roberts, and Miss K. Bland (bon. secretary). The nurses’ report stated that the health of the babies had been satisfactory during the month. It was decided to hold a dance in April during the military camp at Mount Somers, and final arrangements was deferred until the March meeting. Mrs W,. J. Quantock was elected a member of the committee. Seventy points of rain was recorded at Mount Somers last week, which has done muchi to revive rape and turnip crops. after the recent hot dry spell. Apart from a jew isolated late crops, harvest has been completed and farmers are busy attending to the annual ..dipping of flocks. Although shearing has been completed some time, wool is still being transported by rail and t motor to. the wool stores. Good progress is being made at the “Harpenden” wool-scour works, providing employment for a number of local hands. Vandalism in the Mount Somers Cemetery has been prevalent recently. It is stated that as a result of recent raids hardly a grave has escaped attention ofi the vandals. Miss H. Kay (organising secretary of the South Canterbury Sunday Schools’ Federation! visited Mount Somers parish last week. On Thursday she conducted the Bible Cjass at Mount Somers, on Friday a teachers’ class, and on Saturday she took the Sunday School class. There was a good attendance at St. Aidants Church last evening, when the harvest thanksgiving service was held. The church was daintily decorated with flowers, and corn, and there was also a» liberal display of farm and home produce, which are to be forwarded to . St. Saviour’s Homes. The Rev. W. T. Williams; officiated, and Mrs L. M. Goodrich was organist.
