WOMEN’S TEST MATCH. ENGLAND’S BIG SCORE. CHRISTCHURCH!, February 17. In the first Test match played by women cricketers in the Dominion, New Zealand’s representatives fared badly against England on Saturday. They had first use of a perfect wicket, but in 78 minutes’ play the side was dismissed for 44 runs. During the remainder of the day the English players hit off 430 runs for the loss of only four wickets, Miss Snowball and Miss Hide scoring centuries. The declaration of the English innings is expected to-morrow, the final day’s play, and the touring team will almost certainly win by an innings and a very large margin. There were about 3,000 spectators. The English women quickly showed that the New Zealand team lacked bowlers. They played ■, aggressive cricket, but always offered correct defence to a good ball. Two or three loose balls came in nearly every over, however, and these were punished. Miss Snowball, in scoring 189, batted extremely well, using every stroke known to first ejass men players. Miss Hide had a fine repertoire of strokes. She gave one very difficult slip chance before scoring, but thereafter batted perfectly. Of the New Zealand bowlers, Misses Milier, Symons and Hollis were the only ones who looked at all likely to take wickets. The New Zealand fielding was poor. Miss Buck kept wickets very well. Scores were as follow: — NEW ZEALAND. First Innings ••• 44 ENGLAND. First Innings. M. McLagan, c Symons, b Miller 26 E. A. Snowball, c Bishop, b Sf mons ... 189 M. Hide, c sub., b Hollis 110 M. The wicket was good for the resumption of the test cricket match to-day. West Indies emulated England’s slowmotion play against keen bowling and fielding, until Headley’s cutting and on-driving revived the game. He hatted for 90 minutes and hit seven boundaries, Wishart batted for 200 minutes, and once did not score for 25 minutes, though it was a batsman(s wicket. The crowd barracked the bowlers because of many off deliveries too wide for the batsmen to reach. After tea Hollies had an inspired spell. Flighting the ball deceptively, and changing pace cleverly, he was chiefly responsible for the last seven wickets falling in the last five overs. He took five for eight. Scenes: — ENGLAND.
