The Melbourne swimming championships opened here to-day in perfect weather in the recently - completed 55 yards Olympic pool, which is described at the best' in the Southern Hemisphere. The cost of the pool was £30,000. More than 3500 spectators attended the championships. Results included : 100 Yards Championship of Australia—Sakagami (Japan) 1, W. Kendall (N.S.W.) 2, W. Fleming (Queensland) 3, A. Crawford and G. Vockler (Victoria) dead heat, 4. Time, 55 l-ssec. 220 Yards Breast-stroke Championship—W. Weir (Victoria) 1, E. Hobbs (W Australia) 2, R. Houston (Victoria) 3, Kwong Chun Hang (China) 4. Time, 3min 7 2-ssec. ; 440 Yards Invitation Handicap Jean Tans (France) 1, S. Herford (N.S.W.) 2, T. Sampson (Melbourne) 3. Time, smin 10 l-ssec. The field in the 100 yards championship was the best ever seen in Melbourne. It comprised in addition to those placed, B. Hodgson and R. Clark (N.S.W.), Nankivell (W. Australia) and Smitheram (S. Australia). Sakagami drew No. 1 lane next to the wall.

From a perfect start Kondall went to the front, but Sakagami caught him before the turn. In the kick-off Kendall had a slight advantage, but Sakagami won with a brilliant finishing spurt by a yard and a half. Fleming was a touch behind. Kendall holds the resident title. Sakagami's time was l-ssec outside Vockler's record, but the present records were made in shorter pools with more turns. It is unlikely to be bettered for s ome time. NOTABLE PERFORMANCES. ACHIEVEMENTS BY AMERICAN AND FRENCH PERFORMER'S. Swimmers of the Eastern States of America scooped the pool at the A.A.U. carnival at the Jones Beach 57-yard Oriental pool recently. Star performer was the redoubtable Peter Fick, of the N.Y.A.C. Swimming in wonderful style, the'New Yorker won the 120 yards free style swim in 65sec, wiping from the list, Duke Kahanamoku's American long-course record of 67 2-ssec, and on the way passed 100 metres in 57 2-ssec, equalling Johnny Weissmuller's world's best time for a long course. Unfortunately for Fick, only, two timekeepers caught his 'IOO metres time, and his effort will not be given official endorsement as a record. Paul Friesel, of the Dragon Club, Brooklyn, using the new above water arm recovery, won the 100 metres breaststroke test in 1.18 1-5, bettering by l-ssec the national record of veteran Walter Spence.

Two events for -women swimmers, staged for the purpose of allowing title-holders to attack American longcourse records, brought rather amazing results. In the first, at 300 yards free style, three contenders beat Helen Madison's official time of 3.58. Miss Lenore Knight, of Homestead, slashed the record to 3,41 3-5, while the Misses Dorothea Dickenson and Susan Robertson, of N.Y.W.A,. returned 3.49 and 3.52 as named. In the second trial over 400 yards at backstroke, two, starters went well under Mrs Eleanor Holm-Jarrett's American record of 6.0 3-5. Miss Alice Bridge (Whitinville) did 5.45, and Miss Elizabeth Kompa (N.Y.W.A.) 5.53 3-5. The latest performances of Dorothea Dickenson, of the New York Women's Association, which include 200 yards free style in 2.33 and 300 yards in 3.49 over long courses, afford interesting evidence of the value of 'motion pictures as an aid to progress in swimming. Possessing every natural attribute, Miss Dickenson was the despair of the N.Y.W.A. coaches, who for two years have been trying in vain to break her of the costly habit of "over reaching" with a top arm (a fault which, by the way, is probably the most prevalent of any among Australian swimmers).

Then a few months ago the American star attended a picture theatre showing a nowsreel containing slow motion pictures of a carnival at which she competed, and she saw herself in action. As Miss Dickenson subsequently stated: "For the first time, I understand clearly what I was doing incorrectly. I really did! not think before that I was over reaching. Realising the extent of the fault, it was much easier for me to overcome it. Now I am swimming much more comfortably and faster than ever before, particularly over distances beyond 150 yards." Jean Talis, French Olympic representative and champion of Europe, gained a decisive victory in the annual swim in the Seine, through Paris. Jean covered the route in Ihr 50min 47sec, and finished far in front of Oliver Halassy, of Hungary, lhr 55min 20sec, who headed Paul Costoli, of Italy, but was placed third by the referee on the ground that he had interfered with Costoli, Avho received second place, with his fellow countryman Signori fourth. A 16-year-old Parisian girl, Miss Berlioux, led home the women swimmers in 2hr 17min 9sec. She was followed by Miss Anglessy-Maheiux, of Marseilles, in 2hr 25min SOsee, then Miss Seassau, of Nice, in 2hr 27min 23sec.
