STRIKE ENDED.
POLES AND THEIR HOSTAGES.
IN DEEP FRENCH PIT. (United Press Association—Copyright) PARIS, August 8. Tho sensational strike of 200 Polish miners in the Escarpelle pit, who smashed tho ventilation and lighting systems, disconnected the cages and imprisoned themselves at the 900 ft level, ended this evening after a.day and a half. A score of Frenchmen, who had been held as hostages, escaped to the pithead, using the precarious emergency ladders, but the Poles were prepared to starve themselves and their French hostages in order to paralyse the mine until "the dismissed Communists were reinstated. Later in tho day the colliery manager sent a foreman and four assistants to parley with the Polos, but a note was sent up to tho surface to say that the envoys were also held as hostages. In the meantime a strong force of police had been called up. "Finally the management settled the dispute and the whole shift came to ithe surface.
