McCABE'S CENTURY

SCORE AGAINST LANCASHIRE.

AUSTRALIA 336 FOR NINE.

FAST BOWLER ABSENT. (United Press Association—Copyright). LONDON, June 2. Woodfull won the toss at Old Trafford Park and led the Australians in to bat on a fine wicket in perfect weather, opening the match with Lancashire. When stumps were drawn for the day nine wickets had fallen for 335 runs, of which McCabe was responsible for 142, his fourth century of tho tour. Lancashire were unlucky in losing their fast bowler, Baxter, on account of an injury. He took three wickets for 38 runs.

McCabe took the strike against the fast bowler Baxter, with Woodfull at the other end. It was a shock to see the Australian captain, after forty minutes of comfortable batting, bowled by an in-swinger: The score then was 31 for one wicket. Fifteen thousand spectators were present by lunch/when the score was 81 for one. After lunch Brown-flicked the ball into his stumps. In the meantime McCabe had reached 50 in 95 minutes of sedate bat* ting. Baxter's figures were three for 38 when he shattered Darling's wicket, but he then strained himself and retired. The attack thereupon became much simpler, and McCabe, with strong pulls, reached his fourth century of the' tour in ISO minutes. Kippax, who was unnecessarily can- 1 tious, was caught at the wicket—l 79 for four. ; Bromley was just beginning to liven matters when he went out to a ball which kept low. Chipperfield had several uneasy moments before he played right across a good ball. McCabe was deceived by the pace from the pitch and was clean bowled after a splendid innings of 225 minutes, in which he hit fifteen fours—--252 for seven. . Barnett's courageous driving and Grimmett's shrewd patting carried the score along. The partnership added 44 before Grimmett was bowled. Barnett continued nicely, raising 300 in even time. Ebeling batted better than in any previous innings. Barnett's 50 took 85 minutes. Scores: — AUSTRALIA. First Innings.
