ASHBURTON EAST

SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETS.

The Ashburton East School Committee.met last evening, when there were present Messrs \V. &'. Kerr (chairman),' W. J. Miller, E, H. Chikls, H. Money, J. Cook, C. Dellow and S. Groves, The Canterbury' Education Board advised that the dados in two classrooms and an entrance gate would be replaced. Mr T. Nuttall submitted a report on the last meeting of the Canterbury School Committees' Association held in Christchurch. It was decided to thank Mr J. Connolly, M.P., for his donation of £1 Is to the school prize fund. The headmaster (Mr S. G. Macfarlane) reported, that the average attendance for the last five weeks of 1933 was 456 and the average roll 474, a percentage of 96.2. The average attendance for the third term was 447.6 and .the roll 469.3, while for the year the figures were 431 and 451 respectively, the attendance being 95.5 per cent, of the roll. Mr W. Hunter had been -advised that his position was secure for the first term, but as this was likely to bo the poorest in attendance,, the position could still be regarded as very unsatisfactory. The examination results had proved more satisfactory than anticipated. From Primer I. to Standard V. only 74 pupils did not merit promotion, and four in Standard VI. failed £o reach proficiency and competency standard. This meant that 396 out of 4.74 had reached a satisfactory grading. Twentyseven of 37 candidates gained proficiency certificates, there wore six competency certificates awarded and four pupils failed in the examination. A successful breaking-up ceremony had been held and the end-of-term concert realised £5 9s 3d for the school funds. H e mentioned several minor requirements about the school.

In adopting the report, the Committee expressed its thanks to the staff for the concert staged at the end of the year and for the excellent' work done' throughout the year. Special mention was made of Mr IX F. Macdonaid's work in connection with Standard VI., members considering that the proficiency results reflected much credit on him, particularly as there had been so many changes ol" teachers in this class during the year.

Mr Chikls reported on several matters which needed attention about the school.

Messrs Chikls and Cook were appointed a visiting committee for the coming month. The principle, of compiling honours lists for each class at the end of the term was approved by the Committee and it was decided to have some honours cards printed. Each child within the top ten places of the class would have its name on the list, a copy of which would be taken home for the perusal of parents.
