BOROUGH SCHOOL.

MEETING OF THE COMMJTTEE. EXAMINATION SUCCESSES. The Ashburton Borough School Committee met last evening, when there were present Dr.' J. Connor -(chairman), .Messrs W. C. J. Osman, A. L. Jones, W. 11. Sarney, W. G. Welsh, and L. J. Watt. The headmaster (Mr T. B. Haydon) reported that there were 54 candidates for the proficiency examination from the school and of these 51 were successful, two secured competency certificates and one failed. Hardie Silcock and Jan Campbell gained Bell scholarships, tenable at the Ashburton High School. Miss M. Thomas and Mr W. Hockings would succeed Miss Prebble and Mr Pierr as prohationary assistants and under the new rationing system these were fortunately appointed for the whole year. The grounds were in good order, but the grass required cutting. The report was adopted, members congratulating the staff on the success attained in the proficiency examination. Mr T. Nuttall (Cluistchurch) .submitted a report on the business transacted at the last meeting of the Canterbury School Committees' Association. , It was reported that the annual picnic would he held at Timaru on Thursday, Fobruary 15. A credit balance of £3O 3s 5d was shown in the financial statement, with several liabilities to lie met. Messrs H. Smallbone and Welsh were appointed a visiting committee for the month. For the Ashburton West Dental Clinic, Mr Osman reported that indisposition had prevented the nurse from treating children.
