SYDNEY, January 28. The Australian lawn tennis championships resulted as follow : Men’s Singles. Final. F. J. Perry (England) beat J. B. Crawford, 6-3, 7-5, 6-1. Women’s Singles. Final. Miss J. Hartigan beat Mrs M. Molesworth 6-1, 6-4. Mixed Doubles. Final. E. F. Moon and Miss J. Hartigan defeated R. Dunlop and Mrs Westacott, 6-3, 6-4. The courts were slippery after misty rain. Perry played magnificently, throughout. He won many points with good length drives to the corners, forcing Crawford into errors. The Australian’s service was very weak, and he frequently double-faulted. Perry’s anticipation of Crawford’s shots was faultless. Continuing the attack, he ran out an easy winner. An unpleasant incident occurred when Perry was leading 5-1 in the final set. After Crawford had won the sixth game a spectator cried, “How do you like that, Perry?” Perry turned and said something to the crowd regarding barracking and sportsmanship. Further barracking followed. Then Perry said, “What is this, a cricket or a-tennis match?” The game was held up while the umpire asked for order. Miss Hartigan’s strong forehand shots were too good for Mrs Molesworth. The latter appeared not to know whether her opponent intended a sideline or a cross-court shot, so well was the direction of Miss Hartigan s strokes concealed. Had Dunlop afforded Mrs Westacott any support in the mixed doubles the result would probably have been reversed. Mrs Westacott was easily the best of the four, while Dunlop’s play was pathetic. VINES BEATS TILDEN.
