SLIGHT EARTHQUAKE

IN COOK STRAIT AREA. EXPERIENCED AT WELLINGTON. THREE CHIMNEYS DAMAGED. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, This Day. An earthquake classed at the Kelburn Observatory as between five and six on the Rossi-Forel scale, occurred at Wellington, at 5.15 this morning. The epicentre is given as 40 miles from Wellington, in Cook Strait. - Slight damage to three chimneys is reported.

The Secretary of the General Post Office advises that the following reports regarding am earthquake have been received :—■

Nelson.—Prolonged shock of earthquake was felt at 5.15 a.m.' It was preceded by a long rumble. No damage has been reported. The shock was felt slightly at Murchison, being more prolonged at Motueka. The postmaster at Takaka advises that the shock was fairly strong. Blenheim.—A fairly strong earthquake, from north-east to, south-west, preceded by a loud rumbling, occurred at 5.17 a.m. The duration was sixseconds. No damage has been reported. The Eossi scale was six. Wanganui.—A fairly severe earth-' quake was felt at 5.19 a.m. It started with a slight tremble and increased in intensity, causing doors, pictures and electric lights to swing very pronouncedly in an east-to-west direction; it then gradually faded away. Nlo damage has been reported. The shock lasted for 15 to 20 seconds. . Palmerston North.—A slight prolonged trembling earthquake was experienced at 5.18 a.m.
