SWIMMING.
THE ASHBURTON CENTRE. YEAR'S ACTIVITIES REVIEWED. The annual meeting of the Ashburton, Swimming Centre was held last evening, the chairman (Mr J. C. 0. McLachlan) presiding. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £44 8s 4d, the credit at the beginning of the year being £44 3s 9d. The annual report stated that the four clubs affiliated with the centre had varied experiences. The East Ashburton Club was to be congratulated upon its wonderful recovery in membership and financial position. The Ashburton Club was experiencing a lean time and it was hoped that there would be sufficient enthusiasm to raise it to its former status. The Ruapuna Club was to be congratulated upon its continued success. The Meth-
ven Club was hampered in its annual carnival by counter-attractions, but it was controlled by enthusiastic officials. The engaging of a coach by the clubs to instruct learners in correct swimming and to develop prospective champions was well worth attention, and it was urged that this matter should receive further consideration.
A report covering the control of swimming in the schools was submitted by the educational officer (Mr T. L. Crooks). He said that educational work throughout the Dominion had been hampered during the season, owing to the withdrawal of the Government grant, and it did not appear likely that the subsidy would be restored for some time. The borough school was to be congratulated upon the number of children who had qualified for certificates. Although it was discouraging that no certificates were available, the supply haying been exhausted, it was to be hoped that the children would continue their efforts for their educational value. The inclusion of more life-saving events in the programme of school carnivals would encourage more children to become proficient. The reports and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected: President, Mr W. C. Smith; vice-presi-dents, Messrs H. G. Ayres, E. H. Childs, J. W. Bowden and the president of the Ruapuna Club; chairman of executive, Mr J. G. It was agreed to alter the Friedlaiider Cup relay race, conditions to provide for a handicap event for teams of four with a limit of six seconds for baths of 25 yards and eight seconds limit for baths of 33 1-3 yards. -
The lack of entries for the championships allocated to the various clubs was discussed, and it was decided that entries for these exents should be submitted to the centre which would decide whether or not these would be held. ■ '
