COUNTY CENTRES

HIGHBANK. A most enjoyable concert in aid of the funds of the Highbijnk School was lieldi the other evening. The programme was supplied by an Ashburton party under Messrs A. C. Wilson and G. d’Auvergne. The programme consistecl- of songs, comedy duos mid concerted and humorous items. National and fancy dances were contributed by the pupils of Miss Gladys Bushell,' and were much appreciated. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the performers. As a result of the concert the school funds will benefit considerably. Afterwards a. short dance was held, music being supplied by members of the visiting party. MAYFIELD.

A meeting of St, Mary’s Guild was held at the church. Ihe president (Mrs J. J. Mulligan) was in the chair, and there was a. large attendance. Opportunity was taken to welcome the Rev. W. T. Williams, the newly-ap-appointed vicar of tho Mount Somers parish, and formerly of Timaru. Ar-. rangements were completed for the children’s party to be held in the band hall on December 8, each, child to bring a. gift to provide Christmas cheer at St. Saviour’s orphanage. Afternoon tea was served. A competition was won bv Mrs G. A. Baxter.

Tire"members of the Mayfield Young People’s Christian Temperance Union met recently, Miss E. McDowell presiding over a goodi attendance. The report of the district convention was read, also a paper given at the Y convention. A vote of thanks was passed to the Mayfield W.O.T.U. for a donation to the funds.

LAURISTON. To celebrate the winning cf the senior B cup, the Lauriston Ladies’ Hockey Club held a successful “victory dance.” The guests of honour were Messrs E. Davidson, W. B. Risliop add A. G. McHardy, who represented the Ashburton Hockey Centre. A lucky spot fox trot was.won.by Miss D. McNeill and Mr Wallace, while Miss P. Vcrrall and Mr G. Wright were the winners of a Monte Carlo waltz. Music was supplied by Wells’s band, extras being played by Mr J. Cretney. The masters of ceremonies were Messrs W. T. Church and F. Letham. The president of the Ashburton Hockey Referees’ Association (Mr E. Davidson) congratulated the Lauriston hockey team on its excellent record for the season, and presented the senior B cup to the captain (Miss E. Letham). A small presentation was made to the team coach (Mr T. Church) hy Miss Letham as a mark of appreciation for his assistance.

RUAPUNA. The Ruapuna branch of the Women’s Division of tho Farmers’ Union held a successful concert and dance on, Friday evening. The concert . was arranged by Mrs A. T., Smith and party from Ashburton, and Aliss Audrey Ruddock was accompaniste. Items were as follow: —Vocal duos and trios, the party; piano solo, Aliss A. Ruddock; song, Aliss N. Healey; recitation, Miss I. Eel©; solo, Miss H. {Drummond; recitation, ATiss N. Buchanan ; duet in character, Aliss Alary Allan, and N. Healey; solo. Airs A. T. Smith; songs, Aliss J. Dunham, Aliss Alary Allan. The last part of tho programme was taken up by a one-act play, “The Privy Council,” taken from tho diary of Samuel Pepys. The characters were: Ale. •cer, Ali ss N. Buchanan; Airs' Pepys, Aliss N. Healey; Air Pepys, Aliss I. Ede; Alistress Knipp, Airs A. T. Smith; Sir Christopher Mings, Aliss H. Drummond; Sir William Killigrew, Aliss J. Ede. After dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by Aliss E. Ailan, with extras by Aliss G. Ross, a statue rlance was won hy Aliss W. Andrew and Ah’ H. Tasker, and a Alonte Carlo dance was won by Aliss Gallotly and Mr Rowell. Mr S. Clifford was Af.C. HINDS. ' A very pleasant time was spent in the Hinds Hall on Saturday evening, when a farewell dance and card evening was held in honour of Air and Mrs J. Lam out, who are shortly leaving the district. Air S. Tie presented Air and Mrs Lamont with a cheque. Airs Lamont was presented with a set of jugs from the Hinds Sub-branch of the PJunket Society. , Music was supplied by Alorris’s orchestra, and extras were played by Aliss I. Alorris and Air G. McPherson. Air J. Hall was AI.C. RAKAIA.

At the monthly meeting of the Rakaia Methodist Ladies’ Guild, Mrs England presided. Several members of the Methven Guild were present. Devotional exercises were conducted by Airs England and the Rev. K. A. Robinson. Songs were given by Mrs Allan, Miss H. McGeorge, and Mrs Mangin (Methven), and a recitation by Mrs Palmer. Deaconess Davidson, of Christchurch, gave an account of the work done by the deaconesses of the Methodist Church. Afternoon tea was provided by the members.

The funeraji of Mr J. McCarthy, an old resident cf Rakaia, who died on Thursday, was largely attended. Mr McCarthy bad been ill for some time, and was found dead in his shop. The Rev. Father Price conducted .the funeral service.

SEAFIELD. The series of pleasant social evenings held by the Scafield Miniature Rifle Club was brought to a close on Saturday night. There was a large attendance. Mr R. Baynes controlled' the games. The prizes were won by the following:—Airs J. Ale Donald 1, Mrs A. Bennison 2, Miss Alary Martin. 3; Air J. Sbilly 1, Mr J. McDonald 2, Mr R. Grice 3. The captain of the club (Mr R. Baynes) presented the aggregate prizes as follows:—Ladies’trophy donated by Airs A, Shirley, Airs R.

Baynes (1687 points) 1, Miss Nancy Bennison (1665),2, Mrs 11. Grice (1642) 3; men, prize presented by Mrs G. Moorhead, Mr L’T Scott (1819 points) 1, Mr A. Bennison (1619) 2, Mr A. Shirley (1605) 3. Consolation prizes presented by Mrs James Bruce and Mr James Lambie were awarded to Mrs R. Grice and Mr R. Shelly. •Steady rain started to fall just liefore midnight on Saturday, and continued throughout the night, registering a further 47 points. A total of 1.60 in has fallen during the last 10 days. There is a marked difference in the countryside. Both ewes and lambs are doing well with the improvement in the feed.

DOR lE. The Doric Miniature Rifle Club held its annual dance in the Ardamino Hall on Friday evening. Prizes and trophies won during the season were presented by i\lr W- L. Harrison. The winner of the club championship was Ray Kingsbury. Music for the dancing was supplied by Lawler’s band, and extras were played by the Misses N. and L. Banks. Among those present were Mesdames Gardiner, Mucklc, Johnston an Misses L. Lambie, H. Johnson, A. Long, S. Lambie, M. Long, N. McKimmie, J. Carrutliers, B. Johnston, L. Banks, A. Shanks, B. Currey, J. Green, R. Amos, M. Shanks, G. Johnston, M. Currey, M. Scott, M. Tatter son and E. Gardiner. STAVELEY.

The Staveloy Women’s 'lnstitute held its second birthday party in the hall on Friday evening. There was a very large attendance, including representatives from the Mayfield, Methven and Mount Somers Institutes. The hall was decorated with native and garden flowers. A game for children was won by Dot Burgess. Competitions, which were in charge of Miss B. Cunningham, wgre won hy Mrs Beckley and Mr N. HadJer. Dance music was supplied by Mrs W. Bellingham and Mr F. Cutler, and a lucky spot waltz was won by Miss Clifton and Mr Ri. Malzard. A mock court (judge, Miss E. Armstrong; clerk of court, Miss N. Norman; policeman, Miss E. Cliristionsen) caused much amusement. Prizes for the year’s work were presented to Mrs A. Wright, Mrs L. Hicks and Miss M. Fagan. Mrs W. Gundry and Mrs C. Timpsqu tied for the president’s special prize for most entries during the year. Basket ware sold very well in aid of the Institute for the Blind. .Supper was provided and dispensed by members, and a birthday cake, made by Mrs G. L. Button, was cut by the president (Mrs A. W. Russell). Songs were sung by Mrs Cunningham, and the following took part in a one-act play:—Mrs S. Goldsmith, Mrs W. Norman, Misses A. Smith, E. Armstrong, N. Norman and E. Christiansen.
