ENTERTAINMENTS.
MAJESTIC THEATRE. Brilliantly mounted, gorgeously costumed and setting a new standard for screen acting, “Rasputin and the Empress,” Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer ’s • major triumph of the current cinema season was shown at the Majestic Theatre on Saturday, and lived up to its advance reputation of being an even greater and more overpowering film production than “Grand Hotel.” will be screened finally to-night. Not only is “Rasputin and the Empress” dazzling because of its imposing cast beaded by the celebrated Barrymore trio, John, Ethel and Lionel, and Diana Y.ynyard,. in their first joint appearance in films, but because of its tremendous sweep and scope, its gigantic reproductions of the magnificent ceremonials of the prewar Russian dynasty, its poweiful dramatic structure and the wide diversions of striking characterisations.
CAVENDISH CLUB PLAY. There was a {large and interested attendance, at the Cavendish Club on Saturday evening, when the three-act* plav, “Nine Till Six” (by Aimce and Philip Stuart), was produced by Miss Renee Chamberlain. The presentation was a great success. It was well staged, and the sixteen characters were ably interpreted it was apparent .that the players had devoted a good deal' of time to the pieparation of -the play. Miss Chambeilain was the recipient of warm and well-deserved congratulations and the president of the. club (Mrs E. Ruddock) presented to her a bouquet to inaik the club’s appreciation. Mr Ruddock also complimented the players on their The play was presented by members of the, dramatic circle of the club, a branch of the activities that has drawn many favourable comments from members and visitors. The cast \ms as follows Mrs J. Connor (plaving the nart of Mrs Pembroke), Mrs W. Birnie (Miss Roberts), Mrs J. 'Bathgate (Freda) Miss Eileen Milliclmmp (Grade Abbot), Mrs E. AI. Gabitcs (Mrs Abbot), Miss Audi c} Ruddock (Clare Miss Elsie Holland (Daisy), Mrs W. B. W. Bell (Gwladvs) Mrs E. Ruddock (Lady Avonlaye), Miss Thora West (Bridgit Penarth), Mrs Doig (Violet), Mrs k. Kennedy I^Carry), IVlrs F. Smitli (13eatrice), Mrs W. R. Byburn (Judy), Aliss A.ylcen Robilliard (Helen) and Mis J. O’Connor (Madamoiselle). The plav, set in a millinery and dressmaking shop in Regent Street, was presented in three acts and five scenes.
DRUIDS’ SOCIAL. The fortnightly social conducted by the Druids’ Lodge in the 4 ant-red Street Hall on Saturday evening attracted a good attendance of the public. Those present spent an enjoyable evening playing cards and dancing to music supplied by the New Strollers’ Orchestra. Bro. \V. Healey was M.C.
