ASHBURTON RACES

SPRING MEETING. BIG HANDICAP TO CRICKET BAT FIRST TROT TO AN OUTSIDER The Ashburton County Racing Club opened the new racing season in Canterbury to-day when it held its spring fixture an the Ashburton Racecourse. The weather conditions were ideal, a strong sun shinig out of a cloudless sky, and there was only a light breeze from the north-east. There was a good attendance of patrons from Ashburton and .the County, and a special train brought a large number of people from Christchurch and northern centres. The recent rain had put the .track iu first-class order. Some good racing was seen throughout the afternoon and the meeting was counted a complete success. The Ashburton Silver Band was in attendance and presented a programme of music. Results u.p to the time the "Guardian" went to press were as follow: —

Also started: 4-3 Rational II 10.3. 35 Nightcap 10.3, 1-1 Royal Limond 9.8. Tea Garden led all the way, being followed by Don Jose and Royal Limoncl when the field was passing the stand for the first .time. Going round to the far bend Advance Camp and Don Jose were following the leader. All were jumping well. Tea Garden finished easily to win by three lengths from Don Jose,, 'with Advance Camp another half a length away. Nightcap was fourth. Time, 3.15 1-5.

After a good deal of trouble at the barrier, the field got away to a ragged start. Niggerhead, Nightly and The Masquerader were the first to become prominent. Coming round to the straight Royal Amphora had taken charge, being followed by Niggerhead, Davolo, The Masquerader and Nightly. There was a great run down the straight by Nightly and Royal Amphora, the former getting home by a head. Three lengths further back came The Masquerader with Errantry fourth. Time, 1.12 1-5". SELMA TROT HANDICAP, Of 90 sovs, second horse 10 sovs and third horse 5 soys from the stake. (Harness). For horses that can do 3.45 or better. One mile and a-half. 9 (11)—Mrs J. M. The winner, however, came to light again in the straight and won easily from Vanity Fair with Rewai three length's back. The fourth horse was Elyo. Times, 3.24 2-5, 3.27 .2-5, 3.28. In the first half of the race Shatter was close up with Cricket Bat next, and Ramo hemmed in on the rails. Coming round to the straight Chrysology drew away from the bunch, but in the straight Cricket Bat came to light and won by half a head, with Tout le Monde third, three lengths "back. Ramo was fourth. Time 2inin 5 l-ssec.
