AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. HOPE WINS AMATEUR TITLE. MELBOURNE, September 15. The amateur gojf championship of Australia was won by W. L. Hope (Victoria), who in the final defeated A. W. Jackson (Victoria), G and 5 over 3G holes. It was Hope's first appearance for the Australian title. He had previously twice represented Great Britain against the United States in the Walker Cup, and he had played five times for Scotland against England. He was also the first amateur in the British open championship in 1932.

The final of the professional championship of Australia, played over 30 holes at tho Royal Melbourne links, was won by Sam Richardson. (New South Wales), who defeated A. Spence (Victoria). Jackson played his usual consistent game, but Hope was brilliant on the greens and controlled the ball splendidly in a high wind. Sloan Morpeth was eliminated on the thirty-seventh green in the quar-ter-finals by Jackson.

Richardson, the professional cham-

pion, is at present the best and most orthodox shot-maker in Australia. Spence made a big bid to win the double 'for the Yarra Yarra Golf "Club, for Hope, who is also a member, had accomplished the first leg. Richardson's regularity and consistency nonplussed Spence, and Richardson gradually forged ahead with perfect shots in gusty weather to a cfear-cut victory.
