GOLD MINING.
AID IN DEVELOPMENT URGED.
(Special to the "Guardian.") DUNEDIN, Sept. 14
In addressing members of Parliament at a meeting of the Otago Expansion League, the Mayor (the Hey. E. T. Cox) submitted a strong plea for Governmental assistance in the development of the gold mining industry.
In illustrating the use of modern plant and machinery, Mr Cox said that between the years 1493 and 1900 gold to the amount of 487,000,000 ounces had been won from the earth, whereas between 1900 and 1932 the amount of gold won totalled no less than 523,000,000 ounces. The Hand in Africa had played a big part in securing the world's stock of gold for, out of £6,000,000,000 represented by gold discoveries, ore to the value of £1,600,000,000 had come from that district. Eroni a comparatively small and unimportant town, Johannesburg had sprang into a city with a population; of 400,000. The progress the place had made was directly due to the scientific development of the gold industry. He was sure that there were tremendous fields waiting to be opened up in New Zealand, particularly in Otago.
