GOODS STOLEN

TWO CLEVER THIEVES. ASHBURTON SHOPS VISITED. ARTICLES VALUHD AT £IOO. Two men who visited Ashburton last Friday spent a good deal of their time stealing goods from shops, and their daring methods enabled them to walk out of a number of business premises carrying articles valued at nearly £IOO. The thefts took place during the busiest hours of the day, and none of the shopkeepers who had been vobbed knew anything about* their losses till the polico asked them to identify articles recovered. At one outfitter's shop the men took over £ls worth of goods. One of them engaged the attention of the man behind the counter while the. other tried on ovetecats and suits and looked at ties and scarves. When they left ihe shop they carried with them an overcoat, a suit, a number of ties and a shirt. At another shop they tried the same tactics, successfully, and went away with several oairs of trousers, two suits, an overcoat, several scarves, and some cutlery. Elsewhere they took watches and others items of inexpensive jewellery. , It was the boldness of the thieves that enabled them to march off with eo many valuable things, and they picked a time when most of the shops were experiencing the busiest period of the week.
