Mr A. Schnack, of Christchurch, has been appointed musical judge for the brass band section at the contest to be held by the Canterbury Provincial Brass Bands' Association at Leeston on October 7.

Commissioner J. Cunningham (leader of the Salvation Army in New Zealand) and Colonel A. Orsborn '(chief secretary), who visited Ashburton yesterday, left for' Christchurch this morning-

Mr T C. Hobbs Jones (superintendent of mails at Wellington) retires on superannuation this week after 40 years' service in the Post and lelegraph Department. Mr Hobbs Jones joined the department at Napier m August, 1893. He was for some time superintendent of mails in the Canstchurch office.

A remarkable record of 53 years service to the New Plymouth Hospital by Dr. H. B. Leatham will terminate shortly, when Dr. Leatham retires. He was the guest yesterday at a gathering at New Plymouth, which included the Director-General of Health, Dr. M H Watt, and Dr. T. H. A. Vahntine, a former Director-General of Health.

Mr P. G. T. Peacocke is retiring from the service of the Union Bank of Australia on November 11, and intends to leave Gisborne and .to reside in Auckland. Mr Peacocke has been with the bank nearly 42 years. He joined in Auckland, and his service has taken him to most parts of the North and South Islands. He has been manager at Gisborne for a number of years.

Recognition of the valuable work performed by the Hon. J. Bitchener (Minister of Public Works and actingMinister of Education) in the interests of the Timarji Boys' and Girls' High Schools during his term of more than 21 years as chairman of the Board of from which he recently resigned, was made at a combined gathering of pupils of both schools and members of the board yesterday afternoon. The pupils of both schools presented Mr Bitchener witli a silver salver, and Mrs Bitchener with a bouquet, while the Board of Governors made a gift of a fountain pen.

To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the ordination of the Rev. Dr. James Gibb into the Presbyterian Church he will conduct the morning service at St. John's Church, Wellington, on Sunday, and a social function will take place in St. John's Schoolroom on the following Wednesday evening. His oO years in the ministry were completed on March 3 last; but for convenience the celebrations were postponed until later in the year. 'Dr. Gibb commenced his ministry at Footscray (Melbourne) in 1883, and was called first to iDuncdin in 1880. He went to St. John's Ch'urch (Wellington) in 1903, retiring in 1926. He was prominently associated with the foundation of the New Zealand branch of the League of Nations Union and other movements in connection with church and educational work.
