FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the "Guardian," Sept, 13,1883.) Mount Somers Young Men's Mutual Improvement Society.—The usual fortnightly meeting of the Mount Somers Young Men's Mutual Lmprovement Society was held in the Library on Saturday, with the president in the chair. The continuation of the debate on "The respective capabilities of the North and Middle Islands of New Zealand to sustain the largest populations" was re-opened by Mr Williams, who descanted most eloquently on the advantages of the North Island. He was followed by Mr Hood, less eloquently, but more strongly in favour of the Middle Island. After considerable discussion, the opinion of the meeting was taken, and; resulted in a verdict for the Middle Island. Owing to the lateness of the hour, no readings were given. The subject of debate for next meeting will be "The advantages of bare fallowing over green manuring on exhausted land" • affirmative, Mr S. McClimont; Mr A. Harvey. Should time permit, several readings will be given. It is intended that the next meeting shall close the session for 1883. : County Councillor Resigns.—Mr E. G. Wright sent in a written resignation of his position as a member of the Ashburton County Council yesterday. Ashburton High School.—The Ashburton High School will re-open for the third term on Thursday next, TWENTY-FIVE YEARS ACO. (From the "Guardian," Sept. 13,1908.) Loyal Ashburton Lodge.—There Avas a good attendance at the usual meeting of the Loyal Ashburton Lodge, 1.0.0. F., Manchester Unity; held last evening, when Bro. R, H. Davis, N.G., presided. A vote of sympathy 'with the family of the late Bro. Robert Cullen, in their recent bereavement, was passed. R.G. Bro. James Thompson, R.G. Bro. I'. Pritchard. and N.G. Bro. R, Davis were elected the lodge's delegates to the half-yeany district meeting. A discussion took place on the Fwendly Societies' Consolidation Bill, and it was resolved "That this lodge comprising over 200 members, is entirely TO accord with clauses 15, 16 and 17' of the proposed Friendly Societies' Consolidation Bill, and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Premier." Two candidates were proposed for membership and two brethren placed on,, the medical nence list. Mail Delivery at Tinwald.—A daily delivery of mails at Tinwald at 11 o'clock will be commenced to-morrow. This service has been advocated for some time, and its establishment will no doubt be much appreciated by the residents. . ' . , Horse Sold.—Mr John Shearer sold his three-year-old draught colt 'Premier Style, to John McKellar of Southbrideg. for 300 tvumeas. The horse was sent away by this morning train.
