GALE IN THE NORTH

FRUIT ON STEAMER DAMAGED. SOME LOSS ON SHORE. (Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, September 11. A violent easterly gale which raged throughout the week-end abated early this morning, but infUnnittcnt rain continues. The steamer Karetu, from Suva, ran into the storm at 4 o’clock yesterday morning and some of her cargo of bananas and other fruit shifted in the hold and was smashed. The ship was struck by an extra big sea yesterday, and a big pot of boiling soup was hurled off the galley stove, Spalding the cook about the back. The steamer Narbada encountered stormy weather all down the coast on Saturday, and though she arrived at 3 o’clock in the afternoon it was two hours later before she could be berthed. The steamer Canadian Victor, (from Montreal, arrived yesterday morning. The port health officer made three attempts to board the ship from tiro launch, but failed, and the .ship was not berthed till this morning. The cruisers Dunedin and Diomede were due to sail this morning but postponed their departure till conditions moderated.

The steamer Golden Rod, due from Los Angeles to-day, sent a wireless message at 10 o’clock this morning, .stating that she was liove-to 50 miles off Cuvier Island, and that the time of her arrival was uncertain. The steamer Wimvatui and the tanker Willy, both due this morning, will arrive this afternoon.

Damage done on shore by the storm is •chiefly confined to wireless, aerials, verandah awnings and gardens. Fruitgrowers report less damage than was expected.

At the Takanini training track the gale ripped the roof off the horse stalls and hurled timber and iron 73 yards. The damage is estimated at £IOO.
