REMOVAL OF DUTIES SOUGHT REFRIGERATORS AND RADIOS (Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, August J 29. The elimination of .the existing duty of 10 per cent, on British and Australian radio sets and a reduction of the duty on foreign from 42 to 20 per cent, was asked for by Mr W. J. Truscott, director of Spedding, Ltd.-, in evidence before the Tariff Commission. Mr Truscott contended that the assembling industry in New Zealand was uneconomic. The present landing charges on imported sets exceeded 100 per cent. He asserted that assembling was a blind alley occupation for youths who were paid less than Australians doing the same work. He agreed with Professor Murphy that a reasonable revenue duty Avould be appropriate and that there should be an excise duty of 20 per cent. The witness also asked for the abolition of the duty of 65 per cent, oh British refrigerators and a reduction of •the duty on foreign from 140 to 20per cent.
The Auckland sitting of the Commission will end to-morrow or Thursday. Members will leave for the south on Fridayt i
