FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the "Guardian," Aug. 30, 1883). Mount Somers Young_Men's Mutual Improvement Society.—The usual fortnightly meeting of the Mount Somers Young Men's Mutual Improvement Society was held in the library on Saturday night. The president took the chair. The debate on the subject, "Which will sustain the largest population, the North or Middle Island of New Zealand?" took place, Mr J. B. Williams advocating the North and Mr Hood the Middle Island. The subject being a very large one and very interesting, it-was found that the time at the disposal of the meeting would not allow of the debate being completed and it was resolved to postpone it till next meeting. Another debate, "Bare fallowing over green manuring for recruiting exhausted land," was also set down, Mr T. McClymont taking the former and Mr A.. Harvey the latter. Should time permit a reading will be given by Mr W. Annett. Photographic Transparenees.—Only about thirty persons attended at the Town Hair on Tuesday evening. The patronage not approaching the expectations of the manager, no entertainment was given, and those who Jiad paid for admission had their money returned. i , Football.—The following Wellington team has been chosen to play against Auckland: Full-back, Ronaldson; halfbacks, G. Concert.—The Oddfellows' Hall was about three-parts filled last evening oh the occasion of a concert held under the auspices of the Ashburton branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. An excellent programme had been prepared under the direction, chiefly, of Mrs Missen, and this was presented and thoroughly; enjoyed, all the performers receiving much favourable recognition for their efforts. Missen. / ' ; '. ■'■* Social for Stallholders.—A social was tendered to the stallholders at the recently-held Fire Brigade bazaar in the Orange Hall last evening. There were about 150 persons present and a Srogramme of progressive euchre and ancing was carried. Card prizes were won by Mrs Johnstone, senr., Miss Clark 'Fireman H. Sutherland, and G. Wakeham. Mr E, Hughes supplied the music and Mr S. Madden was in charge of the catering. .
