WAGES AND HOURS.
LABOUR’S RECENT PROPOSAL DIFFICULTIES IN THE WAY. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, This Day. The secretary of the Employers’ Federation (Mr T. O. Bishop) stated today in reference to the proposals made by the Alliance of Labour deputation to .the Minister of Labour (the Hon, A. Hamilton) to increase wages and reduce hours that in New Zealand there were two classes of workers —those living by production from tlie land and those 'living by other forms of production. The wages of those living by production from tho land were determined by .the prices of products overseas and' until the arbitrary fixation of wages could: be made to apply to all sections of producers, such a method of solving difficulties must be ruled out. The adoption of a shorter week could come about only by agreement of at least the principal industrial countries. The only hope of such an agreement appeared to be in the work of the International Labour Office at Geneva. As New Zealand has fife largest per capita external trade in the world she is less able than any other country to initiate such a change.
