STATE LOTTERIES.

POPULAR IN NEW SOUTH WALES. SOMETIMES THREE A WEEK. (Special to the “ Guardian.”) WELLINGTON, August 7. The popularity of the State lotteries inducted by the New South AVales Government was remarked upon by Mr L. H. Tingey, of AVellington, who returned yesterday by the Makura from Sydney. There was a continual stream of people walking into the places where the lottery tickets were sold,' said Mr Tingey, in an interview with a reporter, and these places were open all day. On one occasion he had had to wait ten minutes before he could, buy a ticket. Each ticket cost 5s 3d, and the first prize was £SOOO. Sometimes there were three lotteries a week. As soon as the allotment of 100,000 tickets was subscribed for one lottery,, 'another was started. The proceeds went to the hospitals, and they were now on a much better footing than before. The people of New South AVales were strongly in favour of lotteries ; even the opposition of the churches appeared to be waning, probably because of tho good work which was being done for tlio hospitals. In Queensland the lotteries carried first prize of £25,000. Mr Tingey added, and one was drawn while he was in Brisbane. The people of Sydney were now anxious to have their prizes increased to the same figure.
