FOOTBALL.

THE ASHBURTON UNION. BOARD TO APPOINT REFEREES. The Management Committee of the Ashburton Rugby Union met last evening, the president (Mr J. C. C. McLachlan) occupying the chair. Footballs were granted to the Bushside and Tinwald Schools. It was reported that, so far this season the Union had granted footballs to 18 schools. The South Canterbury Rugby Union wrote confirming August 19 for . the representative game at Timaru and also stated that it would arrange a third grade representative match at Geraldine if possible. It was decided to write to the Geraldine Club and ask for the suggestion of a suitable date late in July or early in August. The, Marlborough Union confirmed August 16 as the date for the representative match at, Ashburton.

The Canterbury Union wrote stating that the- Ranfurly Shield match could not be broadcast. The Ellesmere Sub-Union wrote stating that a date for the- annual representative fixture could not be arranged until later in the season. The Methven Football Club wrote correcting statements made concerning the incident at Methven.' a week ago on Saturday. The club said it would appear that AVelsh had been injured by a late tackle, but such was not the case. A. Dolan had possession of the ball and when about to be tackled put out his open hand and fended off, in a perfectly legitimate manner, a would-be tackier. From the remarks of players it appeared that the referee had seen the whole incident and told some Old Boys within the hearing of Methven players that it was an accident. AVhilo sympathising with the injured player, .the club considered that the public in general had been given an entirely wrong conception of the affair.

Mr W. H. Sarney said he had nothing further to say.

In accordance with his notice of motion, Mr N. Robilliard moved that the resolution asking the Appointments Board to submit the names of throe referees for representative fixtures to the Union, at present on the

books, be rescinded. He said the Board had appointed the referees for all except one game last season. He wanted to bring this Board into line with the other committees of the Union. The matter had nothing to do with the referees, yet it was significant that although the Referees' Association passed a resolution protesting against iiis motion, of the eight senior referees seven were in favour of the motion. In seconding the motion, Mr H. D. Johnston said it appeared as though the referees had no faith in their two representatives on the Board. The chairman said the Union still reserved the right of the final say. The motion was carried by four votes to three.

Mr it. Sarney reported that he had met the Sports Association with a view to obtaining closed days at the Domain on July 29 and August 26 for the Possibles v. Probables and Canterbury B matches respectively at £1 Is, but tiro Association had replied that it could not create- a precedent or all clubs would ask for a reduction in rentals.

It was decided to play the Marlborough representative game on 'the Domain Oval and to pay the fee of £2 2s for this game.
