Mr E. A. Denham, of the Ashburton branch of the Bank of Australasia, is at present on annual leave and is visiting Akaroa.
A cable message from London announces that Admiral Sir John Kelly has been appointed Commander-in-Chief at Portsmouth, in succession to Admiral Sir Arthur Waistell. Admiral Kelly in 1931 was appointed Comman-der-in-Chief of the Atlantic Fleet.
The Rey. Ronald S. Watson, who has been apnointed to the charge of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Ashburton, arrived this morning from the north. He was accompanied by Mrs Watson and their two sons. A number of officials of St. Andrew's Church met the new arrivals at .the railway station.
Mr ;W. G. Gallagher left to-day to spend a holiday at Diamond Harbour. He was accompanied ""by Mrs Gallagher, and ho will return to Ashbunton on Wednesday of next week. During his vacation, Mr Gallagher will take the opportunity, as chairman of the Lytteltom Harbour Board, of viewing the bays and harbour works under the jurisdiction of the board.
Mr and Mrs E. Hight,, who left Ashburton to-day for fieathcote, where they will reside in future, were met by parishioners of the Church of the Holy Name at a 'social evening in the schoolroom last night and presented with two easy chairs by the Very Rev. Dean J. J. O'Donnell on their behalf. Master T. Hight was presented with an eversharp pencil. A number of musical items were given* and cards played.
