MATCHES IN THE COUNTY. The Ashburton Rugby Union's competitions were continued in various parts of the County on Saturday afternoon, under fine but dull conditions. There was a small attendance at. the Showgrounds to witness the matches played there. An interesting game was seen when Old Boys seniors met Mayfield, at Mayfield, and after a fairly even ' tussle, the, home team won by 11 to 6. Allenton seniors played Methven on the Showgrounds, and held their own remarkably - well, considering the disparity in weight between the two teams. The half-time score was not altered during the. second spell, although the home team.was somewhat unfortunate in not scoring.

SECOND TEST IN AUSTRALIA
NEW -ZEALAND DEFEATED. SYDNEY, June 18. At the Sydney Cricket Ground Australia beat New Zealand' by six goals to four in the second Association football test match, thus regaining the ashes. The attendance was 5000. The game provided remarkable football. A strange reversal of form by the New Zealanders was a pronounced feature -of the game. The Australian team excelled in short passing rushes. In the first 15 minutes G. Smith (Australia) made the opening score, with a pretty screw kick. New Zealand attacks in the first spell were easily repulsed. McNabb was 'very safe in goal. G. Smith netted two more goals for the home team, and the game appeared to be a walk-over when Cameron and Ci'owhurst succeeded with great kicks. The goals came mostly from the right wing passes' by F. Smith. * At half-time the score vras:
Autralia ... 5 New Zealand ... ... ... 0 After the interval came a revelation. The New Zealand forwards were determined to show that Australia had much under-rated the team. They attacked from the whistle, and within N 10 minutes Chapman, Kay, and Ives had scored goals from kick and follow through tactics. The excitement was intense when Kershaw netted from a penalty kick, and the visitors were only one* point behind. The All Black supporters roared encouragement when the forwards continued their appressive taotime, McNabb being hard pressed to stave off a number of hot shots. Time was fleeting when Hughes made Australia's victory secure by netting a lucky goal from a scrimmage in front of the goal-mouth. The tourists continued their attack, and a •dying effort nearly succeeded when both Ives and Kay just cleared the top bar with terrific kicks. The final scores were:— Australia 6 New Zealand ... ' 4 The unanimous verdict is that McNabb saved Australia from defeat. The New Zealand team has improved since its last appearance in Sydney, the forwards combining better ; with the halves, and attacking and defending with greater understanding. Christie, Kay, Kershaw, and Gerard were the best players for New Zealand, and G. Smith and Crowhnrst were outstanding for Australia. ;
