BASKETBALL.

THE ASHBURTON ASSOCIATION.

Good playing conditions prevailed for the.Ashburton Basketball Association's competitions on Saturday afternoon. Except in the junior grade, in which Allenton tied with Convent, the unbeaten team up to the present, the games, although interesting, were not outstanding. Results areas follow: Senior Grade. The only close senior game on Sat- ; urday was that between High School . Old Girls and. St. Stephen's A, which ] was won by the latter by the narrow margin of two points. Games therefore 1

were not so interesting as usual. In the juniors Allentou. just failed to defeat Convent, which has not ' been beaten in the last two seasons. .

High "School y. Convent Old The speed and accuracy of Green proved altogether too much for Gold. The combination and handling in every case by Green wa>s a treat to watch. School played doggedly against its experienced opponents, and made the game quite interesting. Miss N. Wells shone as forward, and worked in well with Miss McLaughlan who mad© the' most of her opportunities to shoot. Misses P. Mc'i igue and M. Walsh were always on the ball, and seldom made a mistake. 'A'ile tni.ee Green centres played beautifully, and varied tiieir attaeic so as to work in nicely with Misses Fitzgerald ana Jdewson. Tnese latter had a perlect uiiderstanamg in working the pall to tiie goal wliere generally iimsiied on uie attack neatly, liie cieience or Misses Jiowaen and bihitii io'i- uoiti was solid tnrougliout, ana

Miss b‘mith- notched the rust goal for ’uiold. Miss Speddmg intercepted nicely, and enabled Miss Mahoney. to score for Blue. May be- , came uneven, and ‘iuisses begets and Usoorne scored for their sides. Miss rage, in the centre was working well, and she gave Miss l’eez gl, cha’ncefor two pretty shots Miss Grooves intercement, and enabled Miss Smith to score. A hot Gold attack down the" Sideline was intercepted by Miss Spec}? ding, but they came again and scored, to make the half-time score 7 all. Boon alter opening Miss Malioney. shot three goals in quick succession, thanks to fine passing-by her bucks and centres. Ragged play gave Miss Smith a'nice goal. . A period; of lightning shots then ensued, and each side added goal after goal.‘ Gold guards were prominent here, but good combination between Misses Fees and Mahoney enabled Blue to finish two-ahead. 17—15. Miss Don-k refereed the game. Technical Old Girls B v. ’l‘inwald.—— Tinwald was much too strong for White. Play Started first with‘Misses P. Miles .and C. White-defending well for their sides. After even play, Miss Forsyth shot, and she and Miss MeGee -threw several good goals. Both centres Were working hard, but- Tin-wa-ld showed to advantage and their goalers helped them-to bring the score to 7—nil, when: Miss Tyndall sounded half-time. v ‘ v The next spell opened brightly, and was more interesting throughout, White guards and centres doing better. Miss Nordstronr' and Miss Forsytli worked together with Miss Bell in the centre toilieep attacks going, but Miss _J. Crowther .and the White guards stood‘them off time and again. Both sets of forwards failed at shooting in this half, partly because of improved guarding. Score 13-2 in favour of Tina weld. ;, -

I Hinds _v. Allenton Old Girls—This ' game wastruninteresting. The shooting,‘ ,exccpt that of Miss Malzard, Was very Weak, and generally the handling wasl 1 not good. Miss Sims, at centre, was! noutstanding, and Miss Malzard, fort ‘Allenton, secure-d all their goals ex-‘l ‘ cept a good one by Miss \Velsh. For? ’Allenton- the guards ‘had no difficulty lin staving off the attacks and giving‘ their side a lead of 15-1. Miss Gal-butt} had the whistle. ‘ St. Stephen’s .V,Baring Square.— ISquare was right on form and Missesl Donaldson and Porter rattled up eight . geals in less than as many minutes. Wild passing. caused Blue to lose many chances. Misses Pritchard and Anderson threw their only two goals while Red was piling up. 13. fl‘he second spell Opened with false shots for both sides, and Misses Porter and Anderton had a duel in shooting. Blue guards and cent-res worked better and upset Red’s goaling with the result that the play was more even, both, sides scoring 6 goals. Result ‘l9—B..M,i_ss M. Spiller had command. Technical School ,v_. Lyndhursti— School outclassed Blue in a game in which there were flashes of brilliance, and patches of very peer shooting. Miss J.‘ Miles in the centre was the outstanding player for Blue. She stood up well to the fast moving schoOl centres and led her mates well. Miss D. Scott worked well, with Miss C. Fleming, who: was steady at'shooting. Miss Drummond and, occasionally, Miss Ayres, staved ‘ off many attacks. For School Misses Opie and 'McLennan were outstanding. as guards; all the centres were fast and accurate, and Misses Smith and {Doyle were gra-fters in the field, but they failed at shooting. However, they gave Miss Cornish many chances which she made the most of. ln‘spite oil several lapses she shot 15 from 30 shots. iS‘core’24-8. Mrs K. Cowan had charge. , ' . 7
