FIFTY YEARS SYNE.

Ashburton Coursing Club. —A fairly well attended meeting of the members of the Ashburton Coursing Club took place at the Somerset Hotel last evening, when matters in connection with the third coursing meeting of the season were considered. Alter discussion, the resolution regarding entrance fee adopted at the last meeting, was rescinded, and entrance for the ali-aged stake fixed at three guineas and the puppy stakes two guineas, the entries to close at 8 p.m. on Jtily 9. The draw and acceptances will close at the same time. Tne'same officers were reappointed as at the last meeting, with the exception of Mr Tait, who was appointed flagsteward. The entrance fees having been increased, it is expected that outside districts will send dogs to take part in the meet as the stakes will be well worth coursing for. New Theatre for Sydney.—Mr Johnson, the Melbourne architect, is pre-" paring plans for a new theatre, to be erected at the corner of Pitt and Market Streets, Svdney, at a cost of £20,000. Mr'Johnson says the building will eclipse anything of the kind in Melbourne. The building operations at the new theatre on the site of the old Queen's are being vigorously carried on.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the "Guardian," June 17, 1908.) Skating Championship.—There was a, good attendance at the Oddf elloyvs' Hail last 'evening to witness the One Mile Ashburton County Skating Championship, for a gold medal presented t>y the Company. The race was . run against time, and each competitor ha<l the option of a pacer. Mr C Oeisler, of the Zetland Lodge, was the timekeeper. There were seven competitors, and the competition was very keen. Mr H. Thompson, who did the. 44 laps in 6 minutes 7 4-5 seconds, jsecuredthe medal, with Mr J. R. Alingtqii second (6 minutes 16 seconds), and Mr S. Beech third (6 minutes 28 seconds). Miss T. McDonald, J. Brown, H. Bowden, and Master E. Elliott also competed. The Ashburton Golf Club.—The following were the best cards handed in. for the June monthly medal match, played last Thursday and Saturday:— Llewellyn Owen 98—17—81, J. R. Hart 96—14—82, H. H. Fooks 93—10 —B3, P. H, Cox 92—8—84, E. W, Cardale 89—5—84, H. C. E. Stable 96—8—88, C. Denshire 102—14—88, C, F. M. Wroughton 109—17—92, D. Wood 95—2—93, W. A. Grummitt 106—11—95. . „ _ r To Contest Ashburton Seat.—Mr \\ . Nosworthv, of Anama, has decided to contest the Ashburton seat at the general election as a straight-out Oppositionist. Mr Nosworthv has taken this step at the request of a large number of the electors in the district, and on the assurance of their support.
