SPORTS PROTECTION.

THE ASHBURTON ASSOCIATION. The first annual meeting of the Ashburton Sports Protection Association was held last evening, when Mr G. C. Nicoll presided. The annual report stated that the ' association had been in operation for a year and had undoubtedly justified its existence. Although it had only been

necessary to declare one defaulter, a number of cases had been dealt with, arid dues recovered. In addition, the mere existence of the association had had a very salutary effect in enabling clubs to recover arrears of subscriptions. The right of sending in defaulters' names to the association had been extensively used by affiliated clubs as an effective 'ever to obtain payment. Before the foriration of the association, thirty-six athletic clubs in the district signified their intention of joining, and of these twenty-seven had applied for membership and paid their affiliation fees. It was hoped that every effort would be made to increase the membership during the coming year, and when a sufficiently strong representation of all sports had been obtained, application should be made to the governing bodies of the various sports to endorse the associations' disqualifications.

The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £2 4s Bd, but as against this there was a liability to the Sports Association of £3 10s 6d in respect of inaugural expenses, which would have to be paid at a later date. Incidental expenses were exceptionally high owing to the forwarding of circular letters to all sports clubs, and these expenses would not recur during the current year. Officers were elected as follows: Committee, Messrs R. H. Biggar, G. C. Nicoll, F. Madden, C. Ives, and J. Shaw; secretary and treasurer, Mr S. M. Cassidy; auditor, Mr E. B. Condell.

It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mr F. Lennqn in his continued illness.
