CHARITY MATCH AT ASHBURTON CANTERBURY UNION FAVOURABLE. (Special to the “Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Hay. The Management Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening received a deputation from the Ashburton Rugby Union and the Ashburton Citizens’ Relief Committee, consisting of Messrs J. C. 0. McLachlan (president of the union), H. D. Johnston, and G. C. Nicoll, which waited upon the committee with a proposal that a charity game be hold at Ashburton on the King’s Birthday (June 3), between the Ashburton representative side and either a Canterbury “B” side or a'strong city club team. The proceeds would lie devoted to the Ashburton relief funds. Mr Nicoll said that the Ashburton relief allocation had been reduced and there was an urgent need of funds to meet distress this winter. It was felt that a good Rugby game, where the public would get value for .thenoutlay, was one of the best means of raising money. Mr McLachlan said that Ins union was prepared to give to the relief funds the proceeds of the Birthday games, which were the union’s host source of revenue in a season. The chairman (Mr A. E. McPhail) said the draw for the King’s Birthday included University v. Sydenham. As the University team would probably have representatives in the New Zealand University side also playing that dav, there was a chance that, the club fixture might be postponed and Sydenham invited to travel to Ashburton. The request was referred to the Competitions Committee for favourable consideration. THE ASSOCIATION CODE THE NEW ZEALAND 1 COUNCIL WELLINGTON, May 2.
