CHARITY MATCH AT ASHBURTON CANTERBURY UNION FAVOURABLE. (Special to the “Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Hay. The Management Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening received a deputation from the Ashburton Rugby Union and the Ashburton Citizens’ Relief Committee, consisting of Messrs J. C. 0. Nicoll, which waited upon the committee with a proposal that a charity game be hold at Ashburton on the King’s Birthday (June 3), between the Ashburton representative side and either a Canterbury “B” side or a'strong city club team. The proceeds would lie devoted to the Ashburton relief funds. Mr Nicoll said that the Ashburton relief allocation had been reduced and there was an urgent need of funds to meet distress this winter. It was felt that a good Rugby game, where the public would get value for .thenoutlay, was one of the best means of raising money. McPhail) said the draw for the King’s Birthday included University v. Sydenham.
