Smuts has cabled to Mahatma Gandhi urging him to delay fasti nig, saying “endangering your life might lead to a dreadful calamity.” It is understood that the Government of India will shortly consider its responsibility under the gaol rules requiring forcible feeding to prevent death by starvation.
