Nearly 50 years have passed since Sir Mocked won the Metropolitan at Randwick, and few present-day racing men have more than a fleeting recollection of him (writes “Chiron” in the “Australasian”). One of the exceptions is Frank McGrath, who told me in quite recent times that Sir Modred was one of the most beautiful horses he had seen in his long association with racing. McGrath still has a vivid recollection of the beautiful New Zealander, who was described by the late Mr W. H. E. Wanklyn as “one of the handsomest horses foaled south of the line.” Sir Modred was by Traducer from Idalia (imp.), by Cambuscan from Dulcibella, by Voltigeur from Priestess, by The Doctor. Sir Modred was evidently quite as good as he looked, as after racing until he was aged he retired to the stud in Australia, but his career in that capacity was cut short by Mr C. Bruce Lowe, who took him to California and sold him to the millionaire breeder, Mr J. B. Haggin, of Rancho del Paso. Sir Modred was a remarkably successful sire in America. He headed the list of winning sires there in 1894, when his progeny worn more than 200 races during the season. Captain T, B. Merry, in his work on the American thoroughbred, asserted that Sir Modred was the “greatest horse ever imported if you count by the number of races won instead of money values.” The male line of Sir Modred has died out, the last link with him being broken recently in America.
