ECONOMIES BY THE STATE. DEFENCE AND LAW AND ORDER. (Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 4. The Minister of Education (the Hon. R. Masters) addressed the Chamber of Commerce to-night on the economies effected in various State departments, particularly those he controlled —Education and Industries and Commerce. In regard to social services, said Mr Masters, he thought that the Government had reached the stage when further economies could not be made without serious consequences. He could not agree that there should be any further reduction in the defence services and the Government had declined to accept a recommendation of the Economy Commission to reduce further the cost of the Navy by £200,000. The country was spending £688,000 on the preservation of law and order, "said the Minister, who asked if it was wise in times like these, when the world was unsettled, to ask for a reduction in the administration of law and order.
